Is Dinesh Trivedi the Railway Minister? Yes, of course, everybody will say that he is. But the answer is not as simple as it looks. Trivedi is an accomplished politician who has travelled a long way since the days of his association with Chimanbhai Patel, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat. And so he maintains a calm front and keeps up the pretence that he controls the Railway Ministry in front of the media or the political fraternity. But, the real story is something different. Insiders in the Trinamool Congress confirm that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is still the de facto boss of the Railway Ministry. Dinesh Trivedi is just a face. As reports emanating from Rail Bhavan suggest, Trivedi is not happy with the way the Ministry is being run. He has little say in major decisions. He was not allowed to appoint even his personal staff. His private secretary, officer on special duty, personal assistants, etc., all were selected and recommended by Kolkata under the personal supervision of Mamata Di. The minutest details of the Ministry are being reported back to her on a daily basis. The problem with Mamata is that she does not trust anybody; the slightest doubt can send an entity into oblivion. Although she does not mistrust Trivedi, she is in the habit of controlling everything herself. Undoubtedly, Trivedi is akin to a one-man army in Delhi for Mamata. He has good connections with all political parties and she knows this very well. So let’s wait and watch to see how long Mamata can keep hold of the Rail Ministry and West Bengal with the same zeal and enthusiasm. And the corollary is also true: how long can Trivedi put up with this remote control?
